first off, i would like to say how proud i am of matt for pulling an all-nighter last night. i, myself have never been able to stay awake all night studying, but i applaud you for your dedication!

secondly, i pray the day comes quickly when you will never have to do all-nighters to study again!

p.s. i hope our little study date from 4-6am proved beneficial. i'm tired!

faith in the little things

i've noticed lately that somewhat catastrophic events will happen in our life and i feel sometimes that we'll NEVER get through it. usually it's small little things like trying to make $20 of groceries stretch for 10 days for 2 people for 2-3 meals a day and sometimes it's somewhat bigger things like how in the world is matt going to fit in all the classes that he needs to graduate (i think he's going on about 22+ credits for this semester - i lost count).

it's in those really low points where i feel like i have faith the size of a grain of sand that God really shows Himself to be faithful. God has blessed us in ways we never could have imagined. something as silly as the fact that it hasn't really snowed here in boston at all this winter (so far) which i think will go down in boston's history and being the mildest winter - i know God knows that i couldn't handle a blizzard and has been making this winter mild maybe just for me. not that i say that with a selfish attitude, but i know that He is looking out for me. my list goes on and on of all the silly thing that i get so worked up and stressed out about, but i'm glad to know that in the end God uses those things as a blessing.

so without getting worked up about it, but rather posting a prayer request, i know God knows where we're going to be after matt graduates in may, but the fact that we don't know is overwhelming. our prayer request is that God would present an opportunity for matt to work in ministry where he could bring home a paycheck. we pray that the opportunity would be so obvious that the decision would be easy and soon enough to plan the process of where we need to go.

we love you all and pray that you would see God's blessings in even the little things.

a week that will go down in history... (at least for us)

this past week has been absolutely wonderful and we hardly know where to begin, but we'll try.

2 fridays ago, we celebrated our own christmas with fun little presents. my favorite was my new waffle maker that we have used several times this christmas break.

we've tried chocolate chip, peanut butter chip, strawberry with cool whip, and plain with powdered sugar! i think we like them all!

saturday we were off to new jersey to visit matt's mom and her family. on sunday, amanda and jasen flew in from houston and after circling the newark airport at least 8 times we finally got the hugs we had been waiting for :o)

on christmas morning, we were surprised by tons of generous gifts of which our favorite were...

the next 2 days we spent in NYC which was the highlight of our trip! here's a little tour:

DAY 1
we took the train from NJ to NYC which was tons of fun!

our day started with the empire state building and after waiting in line for over 2 hours, we made it to the 86th floor (i think). it was freezing cold and started snowing when we were up there, but it was so awesome! we could see all of nyc!

then we went to visit miss lady liberty - we didn't take the ferry, but we saw her from land

it was a wonderful trip :o)

we safely arrived at the ashdowns yesterday at 7:30 - earlier than expected. we had a great road trip from boston and were able to surprise jasen and amanda at the airport. the weather is rainy and windy, but we're so excited to be with family!

so i've really been wrestling with where God is going to take us after matt is done with school. boston is great, but i don't see us here long-term and it's not a place where we would be able to accomplish our short-time and long-term goals. we have been blessed here, but it doesn't feel like home. so...the two options we have (as of right now) are houston and oregon. both places would be near family and be affordable to buy a house in the near future and they would be warmer than boston. so i simply asked amanda & jasen to come up with a list of the top 10 reasons why we should move to houston. i said, "because we're here" is not allowed. here's what they came up with:

JASEN'S LIST
1. cubbies come to town 16 times a year
2. i can get free tix to all 16 times (box seats anyone?)
3. NO SNOW
4. it is 78 degress on oct 31st
5. concerts: death cab, album leaf, snow patrol, shane and shane, derek webb all this year! (and i got free tix for 3 of these 5)
6. POKER NIGHT
7. amy's ice cream - you will not be dissapointed. i'm pretty sure this is Jesus' fav ice cream fyi
8. beth moore has a bible study here
9. THE FOOD IS AMAZING - tex mex, pappasitos, mission burrito, benihana, and NO LEGAL SEAFOOD
10. phantom of the opera, the lion king, wicked - ALL HERE! yes we get broadway shows all the time
11. coin to fly around to any sweet conference we want and here amazing bands - ie DELIRIOUS AND WILLOW CREEK

(I thought this was more of a list to convince matt with #1, 2, 4, 6, 9 & 11, but not bad)

AMANDA'S LIST
1. you can't say your family in oregon. that's obvious.
2. you can transfer your job no problem.
3. downtown is a sweet place to work in.
4. YOU CAN ACTUALLY AFFORD A HOUSE HERE
5. you can get pluged in at a church, and matt can lead with jasen.
6. the galleria. (HUGE mall)
7. katy mills mall
8. austin is 2.5 hours away. one of my top 5 fav cities.
9. i will be off during the summer, so i can spend it all with you moving here! and driving your cars and stuff back.
10. IKEA is 10 minutes away...
11. (one more in case #1 didn't count) gas costs $1.98 a gallon.

so...depending on a few details that have to be lined up, i think i'm convinced. now we have to work on matt!

the art of mac & cheese

after our dinner last night, i felt the need to help those who are culinarially challenged (don't get me wrong, i'm not a great cook myself, but i have learned a few things in my 24 years). not to mention any names, but i thought mac & cheese was a pretty easy meal to make until last night. so...here are some pointers when making mac & cheese:

*use a normal pot - not a double boiler pot (they look similar, but are NOT the same)
*start with warm water, not freezing cold water (it tends to boil faster)
*COVER the pot with a lid (it too helps it to boil faster)
*after water boils, add pasta and set a timer for 7-8 minutes as indicated on the side of the box. other pasta may take 20 minutes to cook, but not mac & cheese
*drain pasta
*return to pot with appropriate portioning of milk, butter, and powdered neon orange cheese

if not done correctly, you'll have mushy, burned pasta that takes about an hour to make! i love you mattie :o)

christmas in nyc!!

i can't believe it! matt & i get to celebrate christmas with amanda & jasen and matt's mom in nyc! a & j just booked their tickets today, so it's official! we can't wait! i told matt i wanted to take a carriage ride in central park and he laughed at me. i suppose we can't have everything we want for christmas.

my mom came last weekend to hang in boston with us and we had a fabulous time. it was short but sweet.

saturday we went on a hike and at the top there is a beautiful view of boston.

(i work in one of the buildings that are behind the green tree on the right)

sunday we went to church and then out to lunch at red robin and went to the historical town of plymouth. we saw plymouth rock, but man - i thought it would be a lot bigger. it was nothing more than a small boulder. the rest of the town was gorgeous and we had a wonderful time.

today I officially received a job offer! thank you Jesus! I will be working for a company called gensler which is an international architecutre and planning company. I will be the executive assistant working for mr. gensler (the son of the owner), the operations manager, and the markting director in downtown boston. I officially start on monday and I'll be off and running! I can't wait :o) check out the company at gensler.com

just a side note: the company built the biola library and hope hall and re-built horton hall for those who know what i'm talking about.

other things that I'm thanking Jesus for:
*my mom comes to visit on friday
*I didn't have to pay $3.25 for the train to work today
*a restaurant in the mall gave me a free diet coke this morning

can you believe it? we are going to italy next march with about 110 people from the school. we'll be going for 9 days! matt actually gets school credit for going. we can't wait! we are going to rome for the majority of the time and then we're taking a few days to go to venice.

a lesson in boston history

on labor day we had the opportunity to do some more sight seeing in boston. if you come to boston to visit, the must see tour is of the freedom trail. there are 16 historical landmarks within 2.5 miles. there is a red brick path that you follow the whole way, so you don't need a tour guide, however next time we go it would be fun to get all the details and tour the museums.

the freedom trail starts at the boston common where park street church is located. the church was founded in 1809 and was where "america" (my country 'tis of Thee) was first sung on july 4th, 1831.

the next stop is at the granary burying ground where several historical people were buried including samuel adams, peter faneuil, paul revere, and john hancock.

and the memorial for the 5 people who were killed in the boston massacre

next was the king's chapel

then we went to the site of the first ever public school that benjamin franklin helped start. ironically he was the most famous drop-out of the school.

this is a little hard to read because of the shadows, but this little mosaic was in the sidewalk and says "school street boston - site of the oldest public school in the united states. founded 1635".

here is the old south meeting house. it was built in 1729 and was a puritan house of worship. it was from here that an outraged samuel adams gave the signal to proceed with the boston tea party.

next was the old state house. it was the headquarters of british government in boston in 1713. it was outside these doors that the boston massacre unfolded in 1770, and from this balcony that the declaration was first read to the people of boston in 1776. now, the old state house is the oldest surviving public building in boston.

across the street is the famous faneuil hall. it was built in 1742 and has served as an open forum meeting hall and marketplace for over 250 years.

we had lunch at the quincy (pronounced quin-zee) market. on the weekends it's almost like a farmer's market. it was packet on labor day!

next was paul revere's house which was built around 1680.

next was the old north church. on april 18th, 1775, robert newman displayed two lanterns to warn paul revere and others of the british troop movements. paul revere's famous "midnight ride" began with that signal, and so did the american war for independence. it was built in 1723 and is the oldest church building in boston.

then we walked across the boston harbor

our last stop was the uss constitution. it is the oldest commissioned warship in the world and became known as "old ironsides" during the war of 1812.

the ship is docked in the charlestown navy yard which has a beautiful view of the boston skyline.

one of the stops is at bunker hill which we weren't able to go to because it was closed, but we could see the monument from where we walked.

matt passed his first class at boston baptist college with flying colors!! he took exposition of general epistles and got a 96% in the class (which is an A- here)! way to kick some boston butt babe - i'm so proud of you! the semester starts on monday and he's taking 16 units!!

as we are adjusting nicely to the east cost, our little friend is adjusting nicely to his new home on the west coast. truman and nemo are becoming best buddies. he and elsa are still adjusting, but all is going well in the kimball household with the new visitor.

so everyone wants to see our attic and while it's still under construction, we took a few for you to preview. we are very grateful to live on campus and to have an inexpensive place to live, however, some of the features are a little old.

here is our bedroom - we're still sleeping on an air mattress until i get a job and bring home a pay check. no complaints so far - we hear it's better than the dorm beds

our kitchen is nice - no dishwasher or garbage disposal, but it's really not that bad. i've realized that since you wash everything right away, your cabinets are always full of clean dishes! the floor could use some tile or hard wood floors, but the carpet isn't so bad

here's our living room/study room/movie theatre/entertainment room for company - it's definitely the most lived in. we DID get a couch this week and it's pretty comfy i must say!

and the best for last (with a little sarcasm) the bathroom with green floors. (we don't have much shelf space, so until we get a little creative we have some of our stuff on a table)

we did get an IKEA unit which is pretty cool and fit perfectly in this little area in our bathroom

so there's the rough draft. i'm going to attempt to sew some curtains for the kitchen and our bedroom closet that doesn't have a door (however i don't have a sewing machine, so it might take me awhile). we're hoping to get a bed soon and a kitchen table. more to come...

yesterday was our first official trip to boston to check out the sights and "touristy" areas. we left a little late, but we saw the boston commons, the public gardens, george washington on his horse, cheers, newbury street, and the prudential center (with panda express - yes!!) the remains of hurricane ernesto made it really windy, but all in all is was a good time. the buildings are awesome so we took some pictures - which explains some of the random pictures

this week has been somewhat eventful...

matt started school on monday and received 110% on his first two quizes (100% plus the bonus question!). he stayed up until 2:00am last night writing his first exposition on james 2:14-26 and tonight he's studying fervently for his first exam on james (by the way, fervent in greek is "energeo" - it's on his test tomorrow). oh the joys of being married to a bible major!!

i have been busy immersing myself into the boston culture trying to find myself around for interviews with staffing agencies. on tuesday i met with a company called beacon hill staffing and paid $22 to park and had to walk 2 blocks in the pouring rain (i'm from oregon - we don't use umbrellas), so needless to say i was a little wet for my first "interview". things went well and i have my first phone screening tomorrow morning. it was located right next to boston common which is by the state house (a historical landmark i think) and the public garden which is supposed to be beautiful (when it's not raining). i passed by the cheers restaurant and pf changs! YES! matt said we could go for my birthday :o)

today i went to back bay in boston which is in the prudential distict (i think). i took "the T" which is public transportation. it was a lot less expensive than driving and parking. i had a short walk to where i was going and took some pictures along the way.

today was officially the first day of school. matt is taking a "blitz" class which is this week and next week (9 days total - monday is a holiday). class is from 7:30am-12:20pm (which for your so cal folks is 4:30 your time!!) he's taking Exposition of General Epistles - he's a smart cookie. he already has 50 pages of reading on the first night and a 12-15 page paper in a few weeks! gotta love it!! here he is in all his glory at 7:15 this morning

and then we received a surprise from our family (including truman) in oregon - they were gorgeous

we took an ikea run and our first run to the grocery store. it rained again today :o( i suppose we should start getting used to the cold wet weather :o)

so we're now officially in boston - we got here on friday afternoon. it poured rain for our four hour drive from new jersey to boston :o) gotta love the east coast weather! we are settling in our "apartment" which is in the attic of an old mansion on campus

if you see the 4 windows on the top of the house, that's us! the 2 on the left are our living room and the 2 on the right are our bedroom.

we're still unpacking and making it "home". we'll send pictures when it's presentable :o)

we got to new jersey late on wednesday night and spent the night at matt's mom's house in twp of washington. we met jack and lily too. it was good to see mariah and jay and spend some time with them :o) thursday we slept in (which was wonderful!) and then went shopping. we went to H&M for the first time - I think that's our new favorite store.

and then we got to go to new york. besides the high parking prices it was amazing! we had true authentic nyc pizza - sbarro :o) and enjoyed the sights and sounds of times square

tuesday in chicago

tuesday was a dream come true - going to chicago AND a cubbies game!! we had the privilege to say with matt's great aunt kay just north of chicago - she was SO sweet and very hospitable. we had a warm place to stay and a yummy breakfast the next morning :o)

first was lunch at portillos (how could you not visit while in chicago)

and then we took the "skokie swift" (public transportation) to the cubbies game

the cubbies lost, but it was the best part of our trip!!

last night we didn't have internet connection, so i'll do my best to speed you up to where we are tonight. several of you wanted to see pictures of our beautiful country, so most of these are the photos we took while driving.

yesterday we left richfield, utah

drove through the rockies in colorado

through vail (which was freezing, but absolutely gorgeous - we'll definitely go back to visit!) the highlight was the starbucks at the gas station - you better believe we stopped! we hit a little rain between vail and denver, but all of our stuff stayed dry.

through denver - didn't really see much of it, but we did stop at mcdonalds for a bathroom break. we did however notice that they have a dvd rental machine in the parking lot of mcdonalds which seemed to be a hit.

and onto to nebraska - gotta love the bugs on the windshield

today we drove through the MANY cornfields of nebraska and iowa. nebraska is VERY flat and iowa has some interesting people to say the least - the state troopers were everywhere and pulled jeremy over for "speeding" while on cruise control??? what's up with that?? he got away with a warning :o)

we got to illinois tonight and onto chicago tomorrow!! we're staying at a beautiful holiday inn express about 30 miles inside of illinois

and the best thing about road trips...sunflower seeds!!

we picked up the uhaul on thursday and took our mattress to hesperia

then we said good-bye to mom and ashley this morning and they headed north to oregon with truman and we headed east

we've been quite productive these past few days getting ready for the big move - take a look...

the boxes are rolling in

we had a hitch installed on matt's truck to pull the trailer - here's a little shout out to uhaul

i FINALLY boxed up my wedding dress to be preserved

other important items (without pictures)
*we both gave our notices at work
*we booked tickets for allie's mom & sister to fly down on the 17th and then drive allie's car back to oregon - we can't wait to see you guys!
*matt went "back to school shopping" for new "preppy college" clothes
*we've put together the official "bound 4 boston" binder
*we reserved our uhaul trailer
*we bought some books from amazon including " relocating to boston & surrounding areas" with lots of helpful tips for us to know
*we got some boston maps and maps for our road trip from aaa for free! thanks mom & dad for the aaa membership.
*we've cancelled all of our utilities
*AND..most importantly - we found a wonderful couple who wants to sub-lease our apartment which saves us a TON of money! praise God for tom and zhanara! we sign the papers on tuesday!

here is our little friend - truman who is not allowed to live in married housing in boston :o( however, we are looking for a good TEMPORARY home for him while we are in boston (it'll be 9 months). if you know someone who might be interested in babysitting for 9 months, let us know. we do have an emergency backup, so don't worry, he will be taken care of.

please note: we want him back!

yes, the rumors are true! we're headed for boston on august 20th! we're stopping in denver and chicago on the way and yes...we're going to a cubs game! SWEET! we just ordered our tickets for tuesday, august 22nd and they're playing the phillies. make sure to look for us - we're sitting behind home plate - a couple sections up, but who cares...it's a cubbies game at wrigley field!!!

we will be living on campus in one of the two married apartments, so feel free to send house warming gifts - the address is below :o) allie will be looking for a job in boston between now and when we get there and interview once we get there. school starts on august 28th and we'll be off and running! we're so excited. our friends jeremy neiditch and ronnie trujillo are going too, seo we'll have some familiar faces once we get there!
